Kentucky 5th Supreme Court District

All of Fayette County is in Kentucky’s 5th Supreme Court District, which also includes Franklin, Scott, Woodford, Bourbon, Jessamine, Clark, and Madison counties. The Supreme Court of Kentucky is the highest court in the state, and it has the final say on interpreting state laws. It is made up of seven justices who each serve an eight-year term. For particularly serious cases, such as those involving the death penalty, life imprisonment, or sentences of twenty years or more, these cases go directly to the Supreme Court from the circuit court. Additionally, the Supreme Court sets the rules for how all Kentucky courts should operate, including the conduct expected from judges and lawyers.
